Recognizing the rapid growth in commercial space satellites and the need for technically accurate, timely, and relevant information about an increasing number of objects in space, Schafer has formed a Commercial Space Situational Awareness (CSSA) business unit.

In conjunction with the formation of this organization, Schafer has appointed Colonel (Ret) Donald Greiman as Vice President and General manager of this organization.

Together with former astronaut and retired Colonel Mark Brown, Greiman has assembled a team of companies to compliment Schafer's long-standing experience in space situational awareness (SSA).

The Schafer led team is comprised of eight specialized companies who provide comprehensive coverage of space from more than 85 widely distributed electro-optical, radio frequency, and laser sensors covering space objects from LEO to GEO.

The collective capabilities include highly accurate position determination and orbit predictions, robust analysis and common operational views, and actuarial data revealing insights about failure trends, risk assessments, and insurance claims going back to 1957. Products and services range from pre-mission planning and modelling to launch and orbit operations through end of life management of satellites.

Greiman joins Schafer with nearly 40 years of U.S. military and defense industry experience, including a culminating assignment as Vice Commander of the National Air and Space Intelligence Center followed by positions of leadership for industry teams of scientists, engineers, and technologists that delivered innovative R and D, systems engineering, and advanced analytics.

Upon taking the position, Greiman said, "Our team's primary objective is to deliver the affordable, decision quality insight our customers need to realize the return on the billions of dollars they have invested in their space-dependent future."

Greiman joins Schafer with former NASA Administrator, Dr. Michael Griffin, and Mr. John Gilligan, former USAF and DOE CIO. Formed in 1972, the company provides innovative engineering and technology to the military, intelligence, DHS, NASA, new commercial space companies and other industries.

Its focus includes complex, high-level missions and programs, guiding efforts such as development, modeling, and simulation, and communication and technology management.
