France and Venezuela have said they would seek closer cooperation in the energy sector, and discussed potential technology transfers.

Finance Minister Ali Rodriguez and other members of President Hugo Chavez's government met Monday with Jean Marie Paugam, a senior official with the French Economy ministry, a Venezuelan foreign ministry statement said.

Representatives of the two countries discused "technology transfers in several areas based on a Venezuelan delegation proposal on the legal framework for investments, the economic climate, profit repatriation and rail, energy and oil cooperation," the statement added.

The French official stressed that Paris is interested in closer ties with Venezuela in the oil industry.

France's Total has been in Venezuela for years, particularly in the resource-rich Orinoco basin. Total has said it was interested in investing 25 billion dollars (17.14 billion euros) in the South American nation.
