Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF), the GE Vernova-led alliance with Hitachi, Ltd., has announced GNF4, a next generation fuel product designed to improve safety, efficiency, and reliability for boiling water reactors (BWRs). Built on more than six decades of innovation, GNF4 represents the latest evolution in the company's fuel design portfolio.
The new 11×11 GNF4 assembly incorporates two key components licensed by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission: Ziron cladding and aluminosilicate-doped uranium dioxide pellets. The Ziron cladding material offers improved corrosion resistance, building upon the proven Zircaloy 2 cladding used in more than 175,000 GNF assemblies worldwide, while the doped fuel pellets deliver greater structural reliability.
In addition, GNF4 includes the company's proprietary NSF channel material and Defender+ debris filter technology, further enhancing operational performance. "GNF4 is engineered to provide plant operators with lower fuel costs per megawatt hour through increased performance and reliability," said Craig Ranson, Installed Base CEO for GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy. "Our engineering and supply chain teams are leveraging their BWR expertise to introduce this next generation fuel."
Fabrication of GNF4 fuel is underway at the company's manufacturing facility in Wilmington, North Carolina. Initial lead use assemblies are scheduled for deployment in 2026, with full reload quantities targeted for commercial availability by 2030.
