Honeywell reports that its Global Tracking business successfully commissioned a next-generation search and rescue (SAR) system for Canada's Department of National Defense.

The new SAR system helps operators in Mission Control Centers perform their life-saving duties more efficiently by quickly displaying location details of alerts and minimizing error-prone manual data entry, resulting in more effective use of SAR resources around the world.

"Honeywell Global Tracking has worked with the Canadian Department of National Defense for decades, and we're proud to be a partner in the government's bid to reinvest in their search and rescue infrastructure," says Dave Sharratt, general manager, Honeywell Global Tracking.

"Our next-generation search and rescue systems are proven in installations around the world, and we're pleased to see Canada taking a leading role in deploying this life-saving technology."

The newly-commissioned system from Honeywell Global Tracking, the OCC-600, displays Cospas-Sarsat incident alert data received from satellite ground stations and international search and rescue operators around the world. As alert data is received and processed, the OCC-600 automatically generates and distributes location data and other relevant information to the appropriate domestic and foreign search and rescue agencies.

The OCC-600 has been successfully deployed in a number of countries around the world, including Brazil, Malaysia, Peru, Saudi-Arabia, UAE, and Vietnam. Successful commissioning is the formal endorsement by the world's SAR members that the system and its operators meet high international standards for capability and performance.

The international Cospas-Sarsat programme is a satellite-based search and rescue distress alert detection and information distribution system, best known for detecting and locating emergency beacons activated by aircraft, ships and remotely located people in distress. Since its inception in 1985, the Cospas-Sarsat programme has been involved in the rescue of more than 40,000 persons around the world.

Honeywell Global Tracking is the world's leading equipment and services provider of Cospas-Sarsat compliant search and rescue solutions. The company designs and builds solutions for the Ground Stations of three satellite constellations; Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Geostationary Orbit (GEO) and the next-generation Mid-Earth Orbit (MEO) constellations. The company's SAR solution also includes SARMaster, a full-featured incident management application used by front-line operators to coordinate all aspects of search and rescue operations.
