USS America dropped anchor Friday at its new homeport in Sasebo, Japan.

The America, the Navy's newest amphibious assault ship, came from San Diego to serve as flagship of 7th Fleet's Amphibious Squadron 11, and replace the USS Wasp, which spent a year and a half ported in Sasebo.

The America was designed to maximize the capabilities of the Marine Corp's F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, which is capable of short takeoffs and vertical landings, allowing ships like the America to act as small aircraft carriers.

"We're looking forward to integrating America's flexible and adaptable fifth generation capabilities into theater to maintain peace and stability and contribute to the prosperity and security of the Indo-Pacific," said Capt. Luke Frost, America's commanding officer.

The U.S. 7th Fleet area spans 48 million square miles from the International Date Line to the Western Indian Ocean.

The docking of the America follows that of the USS New Orleans, which ported in Sasebo Tuesday and brings the number of amphibious ships docked in Sasebo to five.

Boston Ship Repair awarded $13.4M for repairs on USNS Grumman

Boston Ship Repair has been awarded a $13.4 million contract for repair of the USNS Leroy Grumman for the U.S. Navy.

Work under the contract, announced Thursday by the Department of Defense, will include furnishing general services, port side shell repair, starboard main engine overhaul, port main engine overhaul, new life boat installation and tank deck overhead preservation.

The Grumman is a Henry J. Kaiser-class Navy oiler used for fleet replenishment, allowing ships to remain at sea for longer periods of time.

The repairs and overhauls are to take place over an 87-calendar day shipyard availability in Boston, beginning Feb. 24, 2020 with an expected completion date of May 20, 2020. The contract includes options that if exercised would bring the contract to $15.1 million.

Last December, the Navy awarded Boston Ship Repair a $10.96 million contract for a regular overhaul of the vessel scheduled for spring of this year.
