Six people were killed and at least 10 others were hurt in an accident on a theme park ride in China, state media reported Wednesday, citing local government officials.

Survivors quoted by the official Xinhua news agency said there had been a burning smell and "a bang" on the space rocket-themed ride at the park in Shenzhen, just across the border from Hong Kong.

The ride, which has a capacity of 44, "simulates conditions in a launching rocket," Xinhua said.

"There was a power cut when the accident happened, and I smelt something burnt," one park-goer was quoted as saying. "We managed to open the door to escape before firefighters arrived to rescue others."

Another told the agency: "I heard a bang and then lost consciousness."

A local Communist Party official said the incident was being investigated, Xinhua said, adding journalists had been barred from getting near to the scene.
