The first comprehensive unmanned system demonstration island in China has officially opened in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, announced during an Oct. 18 press conference on the low-space economy. This initiative marks a significant development in unmanned vehicle testing, providing an expansive, integrated testing zone in a unique environment.

Located on Shengze Lake in Suzhou's Xiangcheng district, the 0.11-square-kilometer island facilitates unmanned systems from ground-based to aerial vehicles. This enclosed, specialized environment is designed to support testing across different unmanned vehicle types, including passenger and cargo applications, ensuring heightened coordination and safety standards for advanced autonomous operations.

Current infrastructure on the island includes interconnected smart parking facilities, docking stations for automated vessels, landing platforms, and dedicated testing zones for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Further construction is planned on the island's northwest section, anticipated to expand capabilities with additional testing and operational zones.

Shengze Lake, Jiangsu's only natural lake to achieve national class II water quality, provides an ideal setting for accurate unmanned vehicle testing data. With a high concentration of negative oxygen ions and 90% of days registering good air quality, the area supports enhanced accuracy in system evaluations.

Prior to the island's establishment, the Suzhou-based company behind this project utilized a hangar over 200 kilometers away at Changzhou's Liyang Changdanghu Airport. The island's controlled environment now offers enhanced security and operational flexibility for drone testing, supporting accelerated research and development timelines in the fast-growing eVTOL sector.

Looking forward, the demonstration island aims to expand into a multifunctional hub for unmanned systems. The site will host activities ranging from performance testing to industry exchanges, training, and experiential learning, establishing it as a central player in the unmanned systems sector.
