The Giraffe family of surface radars has been expanded by Saab of Sweden with the addition of five active electronically-scanned array variants. Giraffe 1X and Sea Giraffe 1X are short-range radars with an X-band AESA and offer a set of 3D functions; Giraffe 4A and Sea Giraffe 4A are medium- to long-range radars which marry air surveillance, air defense, sense and warn and weapon-locating capabilities in an S-band AESA-based unit. The long-range Giraffe S-band AESA radar is the 8A, which features an anti-ballistic missile capability, Saab said. "I'm proud to present this important milestone in our surface radar development," said Micael Johansson, head of Saab's Electronic Defense Systems business area. "Our portfolio now caters for all advanced radar requirements, from very short- to long-range air defense, but also surveillance, and weapons location with true multi-role functionality." Saab announced it has also enhanced other radar products. The C-band Giraffe AMB and Sea Giraffe AMB for short- to medium-range surveillance and command and control have been given increased range. Arthur, a C-band medium-range weapons-locating system, which detects and locates enemy fire, has also been improved.
