Obama to unveil tighter vehicle emission standards: source Washington (AFP) May 18, 2009 President Barack Obama plans to unveil tighter US vehicle emissions standards and fuel economy standards on Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the plans told AFP. The new standards will end a legal battle over the stringent standards imposed by the state of California which have been challenged by the auto industry and put an end to the current patchwork of standards. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and auto executives are expected in Washington for the announcement. The new policy will also give more certainty to struggling automakers who are working to refit vehicles by streamlining the regulatory process. The Department of Transportation currently regulates fuel economy standards while the Environmental Protection Agency is charged with regulating emissions. Share This Article With Planet Earth
