China's Brilliance reveals Daimler joint venture talks
Shanghai (AFP) Aug 3, 2009 China's Brilliance Auto said Monday it is in talks with German auto and truck maker Daimler to set up a joint venture making special-use vehicles in China. "The project is to convert Daimler's commercial vehicles into special purpose vehicles. We have been in discussion since last year," a Brilliance Auto executive told AFP. The joint venture's products would be sold in the Chinese market, said the executive, who declined to be named because the details of the joint venture have yet to be finalised. Daimler officials were not immediately available for comment. Special vehicles often refer to trucks built for specific municipal or commercial applications. Currently, Daimler manufactures commercial vehicles in China through a joint venture with China's Fujian Motor and Taiwan's China Motor. The company makes Mercedes-Benz passenger cars in China with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp (BAIC) and it has also agreed to set up a truck venture with BAIC subsidiary Beiqi Foton Motor Co. Hong Kong-listed Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd, a unit of Brilliance Auto, is the local partner of German luxury car maker BMW and produces BMW's 3 and 5 series sedans in Shenyang city in northeastern China.
