Canada scraps 50,000 high-polluting cars
Ottawa (AFP) Nov 13, 2009 Canadians have traded in more than 50,000 high-polluting old clunkers for bus passes, bike discounts or newer and greener cars, Environment Minister Jim Prentice said Friday. Canada's Retire Your Ride program, which began in January, has resulted in "approximately 2,250 tonnes of smog-forming pollutants being removed from our atmosphere," he said in a statement. The government-funded program offers incentives to Canadians who retire vehicle models from 1995 or earlier. These older vehicles are 19 times more polluting than 2004 and newer model years. In exchange, they may receive free public transit passes, rebates on bicycles, memberships in car-sharing programs or 300 dollars in cash for each vehicle. Share This Article With Planet Earth
