AgustaWestland gets Indonesian and Malaysian helicopter orders
by Staff Writers
Jakarta (UPI) Feb 20, 2013

AgustaWestland announced it has signed a deal to provide Indonesian charter service Travira Air with two twin-engine AW139 intermediate helicopters.

Travira Air, based in Jakarta, has been operating charter services since 1983, including flights for offshore oil and gas company executives and clients in the mining and medical sectors.

AgustaWestland also announced a deal with the Malaysian company Weststar Aviation Services for 10 AW139s, signed at the Singapore Air Show last week.

A statement by AgustaWestland said the Indonesian and Malaysian orders boosted its Southeast Asian market share in the intermediate helicopter sector to 56 percent.

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, runs a wholly owned Southeast Asia maintenance and training center AgustaWestland Malaysia at Kuala Lumpur's Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport.

Agusta also signed of a letter of intent this month to appoint STA Systems of Singapore, a subsidiary of ST Aerospace, as an authorized component repair center.

STA Systems will start operations by midyear and specialize in dynamic components for the AW109 and the AW139 models. .

The Indonesian and Malaysian deals came after the Philippine navy announced it would buy two more AW109 Power maritime helicopters.

The two helicopters, to be delivered by the end of the year, will join the navy's three other AW109s operating from shore and ship bases for surveillance, search and rescue operations and maritime security.

The Philippine army has been using the AW109 since signing a contract for eight units in 2013.

Vincenzo Alaimo, AgustaWestland's head of Southeast Asia sales, said the AW109 is proving itself a "very capable and cost effective helicopter" for Philippine national security and safety.

The 3-ton eight-seat AW109 Power has two Pratt & Whitney PW206C engines that incorporate a full authority digital engine control -- FADEC -- system.

AgustaWestland said it has sold 580 AW109 Power and AW109 Light Utility Helicopters in nearly 50 countries.
