Measuring Salt Shine To Improve Climate Understanding
London, UK (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
From 14 - 25 August 2010, scientists from around the world will gather in Southern Turkey to measure the spectral reflectance of a few square kilometres of salt. These measurements will have a major impact on the future of satellite based Earth observation, and will ultimately improve our understanding of the Earth's climate. Six million children are suffering from Pakistan's devastating floods: lost, orphaned or stricken with diarrhoea, they are the most vulnerable victims of the nation's worst-ever natural disaster. At relief camps in government schools and colleges and in tent villages on the edge of towns and by roadways, children are prostate from the heat, sick from poor drinking water, or simply trying to ... more

Time short for Ladakh flood victims as winter looms
Leh, India (AFP) Aug 16, 2010
Winters come harsh and early in India's Himalayan region of Ladakh, where the waning summer spells more hardship for thousands left homeless by devastating flash floods. Wax, Soap Clean Up Obstacles To Better Batteries
Richland WA (SPX) Aug 17, 2010
A little wax and soap can help build electrodes for cheaper lithium ion batteries, according to a study in Nano Letters. The one-step method will allow battery developers to explore lower-priced alternatives to the lithium ion-metal oxide batteries currently on the market. "Paraffin provides a medium in which to grow good electrode materials," said material scientist Daiwon Choi of the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. "This method will help researchers investigate cath ... read more
