Britain launches first space agency
London (AFP) March 23, 2010
Britain launched its own space agency Tuesday with the help of home-grown astronaut Major Timothy Peake, aimed at boosting the country's multi-billion-pound space technology industry. While Peake may be its only astronaut, Britain is a world leader in areas such as robotics, satellites and telecommunications, which contribute about six billion pounds (nine billion dollars, 6.7 billion euros) a year to the economy. An avalanche struck a remote mountainous area of northern Afghanistan three weeks ago, killing 35 people and burying homes beneath thick snow, a provincial official said Tuesday. Indonesia's massive geothermal energy potential has been boosted by a $400 million investment fund plan to help double the sector's energy capacity, the World Bank announced. A Chinese court moved the highly sensitive trial of an Australian executive and three local employees of mining giant Rio Tinto behind closed doors on Tuesday to hear industrial espionage charges.
