US official questions China space intentions
Washington (AFP) Jan 13, 2010
A senior US defense official on Wednesday voiced doubts about China's insistence that its use of space is for peaceful means as Washington appealed for steady military ties with the rising Asian power. "The Chinese have stated that they oppose the militarization of space. "We continue to press the Chinese for explanation," Gregson told a congressional hearing. ... read more

US should consider drones, air attacks in Yemen: Senator
Washington (AFP) Jan 13, 2010
The United States should consider targeting Al-Qaeda extremists in Yemen with armed drones, air strikes, or covert operations, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman Carl Levin said Wednesday. "Most options ought to be on the table," short of invasion by US forces, the Democratic lawmaker from Michigan said on a conference call with reporters after a trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan. ... more

Patients with "severe traumas, head wounds, crushed limbs" have been streaming into temporary structures set up by MSF in and around Port-au-Prince, but the medical charity is only able ... more

Google case shows difficulties of China presence: analysts
Beijing (AFP) Jan 13, 2010
Google's threat to pull out of China is evidence of the difficulties faced by foreign firms operating in the land of the "Great Firewall", and could signal a tougher government line, analysts say. The announcement that the US Internet giant might forego operations in the country with the world's largest online population might just be good business, as it has never matched up to its Chinese rivals on the mainland, they say. "This is a very politically charged environment," Duncan Clark, an analyst at Beijing-based high-tech consultancy BDA, told AFP. ... more
