Russia wants more Israeli spy drones
Tel Aviv, Israel (UPI) Dec 8, 2009
Russia is seeking to acquire more Israeli unmanned aerial vehicles under a $100 million deal that has more to do with bribing Moscow not to supply Iran with state-of-the-art air-defense missiles that could skewer any Israeli air assault than it has with dollars and cents. Russia has not been able to produce an effective UAV, a weakness exposed during its brief 2008 conflict with Georgia ... more

Turning trash into treasure, and keeping it green in Cairo
Cairo (AFP) Dec 8, 2009
In an attempt to help curb the city's stifling pollution and meet their energy needs too, a few Cairo families have begun to recycle waste -- now that the nation's pigs are gone -- by generating biogas from rubbish. It is an ambitious project that is still in its infancy but may just catch on in this teeming city of 18 million people, often obscured in a dirty grey veil of haze produced ... more

Stronger Chinese auto sales lift luxury German brands
Frankfurt (AFP) Dec 8, 2009
Stronger Chinese auto sales have lifted the prospects of German luxury car makers which were left behind in an earlier rush to buy cheaper models with 'cash-for-clunkers' subsidies, analysts say. Audi, BMW and Daimler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, all reported better sales in November on a 12-month basis, with China clearly the fastest growing market for all three. "China is standing out ... more
