Reston VA (SPX) Jul 21, 2008 The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) will hold the SPACE 2008 Conference and Exposition September 9-11 at the San Diego Convention Center, San Diego, Calif. The conference is co-chaired by NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems Center. Sponsors of the conference are: ATK; Northrop Grumman Corp.; Orbital Science Corp.; Raytheon Company; Stellar Solutions, Inc.; The Aerospace Corporation; and United Space Alliance. The AIAA SPACE 2008 program will offer attendees a blend of keynote addresses, plenary sessions, moderated panel sessions and technical paper sessions. The conference's theme: "Future Space: National Priorities, Critical Decisions," will thoroughly examine three main themes of the 2008 presidential campaign: American economic competitiveness, the global war on terror, and the need for increased monitoring of global climate change. Guiding the formation of the conference are executive co-chairs: Dr. Charles Elachi, director, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory; Lt. Gen John T. Sheridan, commander, U.S. Air Force Space and Missile Systems; David W. Thompson, chairman and CEO, Orbital Sciences Corporation; Dr. Alexis Livanos, corporate vice president and president, Northrop Grumman Space Technology; and Michael Keebaugh, president, intelligence and information systems at Raytheon Company. The AIAA SPACE 2008 conference will kick-off with remarks from California Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi and AIAA President George K. Muellner. Following their remarks an opening panel session with the conference executive chairs discussing "Future Space: National Priorities, Critical Decisions," will take place. The panel will give attendees a critical look at the future uses of space by industry and the military. Luncheon keynote addresses include high-level government representatives and business leaders: Tuesday, September 9, 12:30 p.m. - Opening Keynote Luncheon, David McGlade, CEO, Intelsat, Ltd. Wednesday, September 10, Noon -AIAA Awards Luncheon, the Honorable Michael D. Griffin, NASA Administrator. Thursday, September 11, Noon - "STRATCOM 2008: Year of Change," Gen. Kevin P. Chilton, commander, U.S. Strategic Command. A special event, the William H. Pickering Lecture, will be held on Wednesday, September 10. This year's lecture will honor the Phoenix Mars Mission, NASA's exploration of the surface of Mars. Peter Smith, principal investigator and project leader, University of Arizona, and Barry Goldstein, project manager, NASA Joint Propulsion Laboratory will make presentations.
